STEP 1: IDENTIFICATION OF PROBLEMS AND OPPORTUNITIES: The challenge of this project is to create a tower of paper this is able to stand on its own for at least a minute but has to be a minimum of 30 inches. It all has to be held together by tape.
STEP 2: DESIGN BRIEF: For this project i will need 4 sheets of 8.5 x 11 paper. I will also need 1 meter of tape. I am only allowed to use the 4 sheets of paper but the tower has the be at lest 30 inches tall. 4 classes will be offered to complete this project.
STEP 3: INVESTIGATION AND RESEARCH: I have to create the tower wide enough on the base that it will not fall over but also make it large enough that it reaches the 30 inch height limit. The tape will make the tower somewhat sturdier so i have to put tape where ever i can but also realizing i only have 1 meter of tape to use. So i have to use it strategically.
STEP 4: GENERATE ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS: 1. I could create a pyramid type tower creating the base with one sheet of paper, then putting the other 3 sheets on the top truing to create a triangular pyramid.
2. I could try to create the shape of a house roof by taping two sheets together on the top and lean both top sheets of both sides together and then tape them.
3. I could create a box on the bottom using the ground as the base then stick one piece of paper straight up.
STEP 5: CHOOSE THE BEST SOLUTION: 1. I believe that this idea would be the most sturdy design and would"t fall over but i don't think the tower would reach the height requirement for the project.
2. This idea would reach the height requirement but be very floppy and not sturdy and i don't know id this design would be able to stand for a whole minute.
3. This idea seems like it would be a little more sturdy than my second idea and i do believe that this idea may reach the height requirement.
*** I think idea number 3 will be my best choice to go with for this project.
STEP 6: FABRICATION: STEP 1: Fold the 2 sheets of paper into 4 rectangular prisms then tap them together so they stay in a rectangular prism shape.
STEP 2: Stand one of the prisms up on its base then place another prism on top of that one with the straight edge crossing the corners of the bottom prism. Continue this step until you you have places all the prisms on top of one another.
STEP 3: Once step 2 is completed and all the prisms are on each other, tape them together and make sure you tape them correctly so the tower stays sturdy, then video tape your tower for a minute to see if it stands for a whole 1 minute.
STEP 7: TESTING AND EVALUATION: My tower managed to stand for a whole minute and also surpassed the height requirement by a couple inches. I managed to build a paper tower than met the requirements for the project.
STEP 8: REDESIGNING AND IMPROVING: To make my tower better i could have done a better taping job to make it more sturdy and maybe made the base a little bit wider but other than that is was a good tower and passed the test.
